Note 37. Control Characteristics

Many of the energy conservation measures of the Energy Efficiency Manual involve improvements to automatic temperature controls and other types of automatic controls. This Note explains the basic concepts of automatic controls. It covers setpoints, two-position controls, stepped controls, and proportional controls, including proportional-integral (PI), and proportional-integral-derivative (PID). The difference between analog controls and digital controls is summarized, as well as the difference between open-loop controls and closed-loop controls.
