1.11 Conduction and Radiation Losses

This part of the Energy Efficiency Manual presents the energy conservation measures that apply to the insulation of your heating systems. Approximately two percent of the total heat output of an interior boiler plant is lost because of imperfect insulation. Heat loss through buried steam and hot water pipes can be much greater. This Subsection explains how to find insulation defects and how to repair them.

You can greatly reduce heat loss from pipe in tunnels by carefully controlling the ventilation of the tunnels. The methods are explained here.

The heat that is lost to the boiler room air can be partially recovered by using the warmest air for combustion. This is tricky to accomplish properly. The principles and methods are explained and illustrated.
