2.1 Equipment Scheduling and Operating Practices
This part of the Energy Efficiency Manual presents energy conservation measures limit the operation of equipment to the times when it is actually needed. Turning off equipment when it is not needed is the most powerful principle of energy conservation. The methods presented here minimize the operation of the big cooling machines in central cooling and refrigeration plants, along with their auxiliary equipment.
Another important principle is to select the most efficient combination of equipment for each set of conditions. For example, as each chiller starts or stops, the appropriate pumps in the chilled water and cooling tower systems should start or stop. You will learn how to accomplish this, including the use of inexpensive sequencing controls.
All these activities involve control. They may provide large savings at modest cost. Most of them are easy to accomplish.
