Note 30. Boiler Types and Ratings

The Energy Efficiency Manual gives you a wide range of efficiency improvements for boilers and boiler systems. This Note gives you an overview of boiler types. It explains all the major types, including firetube boilers, watertube boilers, cast iron sectional boilers, condensing boilers, and electric boilers. The types are extensively illustrated.

Boilers have existed for a long time, so boiler capacity is expressed by a jumble of different rating methods. You will learn the meanings of boiler horsepower, heating surface, square feet of equivalent direct radiation (EDR), and “net output” as defined by both the Institute of Boiler and Radiator Manufacturers (IBR) and the Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA).
