10.2 Centrifugal Pumps

This part of the Energy Efficiency Manual shows how to improve the efficiency of your centrifugal pumps. Centrifugal pumps are used in virtually all buildings and in a majority of industrial plants. In many facilities, pumps are major energy consumers.

Here you will learn two essential methods of matching the output of centrifugal pumps to the requirements of their systems. One is pump impeller trimming, which is a very efficient method of reducing pump output, within limits. The other method is pump throttling, which is a relatively inefficient stopgap method.
