1.5 Draft Control

This part of the Energy Efficiency Manual presents the energy conservation measures that optimize the draft in your boilers. Draft is the flow of air into a boiler and the flow of exhaust out of the boiler. Control of draft may have a major effect on efficiency. Badly controlled draft can cause serious safety hazards. Learn how to adjust draft for best efficiency and repair defects in flue systems.

“Standby loss” is a big source of energy waste that is related to draft. It occurs in older types of boilers and in some modern types. Here are modifications that may substantially reduce standby loss.
